Yummy Yucky

YY6Allie has this great little book called Yummy Yucky by Leslie Patricelli. We have a few books by Leslie Patricelli and I love them all. Hopefully we can add to our collection. They are fun, clever, and bright.

YY1Cute, right? I thought it would be fun to do our own version of yummy yucky with some of the things we have experienced in Jamaica so far.

Rice cereal is yummy! We started Allie on solids recently and she is doing really well.

Peas are yucky!  She actually liked the peas eventually, this face was just the initial shock of a new taste in her mouth.

Patties are yummy! A Jamaican patty is a pastry that contains various fillings and spices baked inside a flaky shell. It is traditionally filled with seasoned beef, but fillings can include chicken, pork, lamb, veggies, fish, or cheese.

coco bread

Coco bread is yummy! The bread made with coconut milk making it slightly sweet. You open it up and put a patty inside to make you own patty sandwich… delish!

IMG_3365 Boxed milk that comes off the shelf is yucky! I know, I know, it’s just milk but it tastes different to me. Kind of bitter! I have hopes that I will get used to it eventually… maybe…

However, this little box of ovaltine milk I found is yummy! Those who know me well know I LOVE chocolate milk, ovaltine specifically.

Fresh local pineapple is yummy!

Mangos right off the tree in our complex are yummy!

jerk pork

Jerk pork is yummy! I don’t tolerate spicy food very well but so far I have been able to handle all the jerk I have encountered.  I’m sure that won’t last our full tour though!

Locally made soda is yummy! I love a big, cold root beer but pineapple and orange soda are really satisfying too.

rice peas

Rice and peas is yummy! Yes, those are beans but the dish is called rice and peas.

Oranges that are green are yummy! That orange is fully ripe and it tastes like a normal orange it’s just green on the outside. A little weird!

Papaya is yucky? I was surprised when I didn’t like papaya. It sounds so exotic and delicious.

I guess our version is mostly yummy which is good for us! But that’s because we really haven’t been adventurous at all in our eating. Scott had pig tail for lunch and said that was yummy. We still have a lot of local cuisine to try such as curry goat, ackee & saltfish, and lots of local fruits and veggies we haven’t tasted yet. I will keep you posted on all the deliciousness!
